Getting the Relationship Right: No Priest But Jesus

This sermon from Hebrews 5 and 7 explores why Christians instinctively long for someone to help them reconnect with God in seasons of sin, doubt, and suffering. As Pastor Jason prepares for an eight-week sabbatical, he challenges the congregation to examine whether their relationship with their pastor has become spiritually misplaced. The Bible teaches that sinners really do need a priest—a mediator who can bring them near to God. But Hebrews shows that no pastor, priest, mentor, or Christian leader can finally give us the assurance, forgiveness, sympathy, and access to God that we need. Only Jesus Christ, our sinless and risen Great High Priest, has offered the once-for-all sacrifice that secures our reconciliation with God forever. Pastors are gifts from God, but their calling is not to replace Jesus. Their ministry is meant to point believers back to Christ, increase dependence on Him, and remind the church that Jesus is alive, available, praying for His people, and sufficient for every season.
