This year they reached the blue shutters. You can see it from where you stand. You understand, a little, why a person might see that and quietly decide not to leave. There is no music. You keep waiting for it the way you wait for it everywhere else, and it doesn't come, and after a while you stop waiting. What's left is better. Morning birdsong, close and unbothered, one bird answering another somewhere in the maples. A fresh breeze that finds the foxgloves first, then the tall spires of delphinium, tips them, lets them stand back up. Underneath, so soft you catch it only after you've gone still, the last of the night's crickets. golden hour, though you're not sure that's the right name for a light this patient. It comes low through the trees and lies down across the daisies. Warms the stone. Warms your hands, if you let yourself imagine hands. A thread of smoke lifts from the chimney even now, even in July, and you decide that's the kind of house this is, a house that keeps a fire for no reason but wanting one. You don't move. That's the strange part, the part you'll think about later. There's a porch up there with its wide plank steps, and a bench under the maple, and a hundred places to go, and you stay exactly where the gate let you in. Because from here you can hold all of it at once. The white farmhouse. The blue shutters buried in roses. The cottage garden breathing in the wind. Ten hours, and nowhere you have to be for any of them. Stay. The birds don't mind. The roses reached the shutters this year, and honestly, so would you.
