The English poet William Wordsworth described his new home and the garden surrounding it as “The loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” My first encounter with Wordsworth came through his well-known poem Daffodils. A friend recited it from memory one day – a simple moment, yet it stayed with me. That small memory gave depth to this journey. In spring, daffodils bloom across the English countryside. Even if I leave this country one day, I think I’ll remember its spring each time I see yellow daffodils. Opening lines of the original poem... “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” ----------------------------- I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. ----------------------------- English verse has its own rhythm, just as the traditional 7–5 syllable pattern feels natural to Japanese ears. This poem follows a metre called iambic pentameter, which was also favoured by Shakespeare. Each line has five pairs of syllables, where the stress falls on the second in each pair: I wandered lonely as a cloud → i WAN / dered LONE / ly AS / a CLOUD While working on this video, I came across many such details – and each discovery added something to my life.
