In his old age, Cajal converses in his office with his assistant, asks for the book he is writing, and they review it. Cajal receives a full discharge from the army and returns to Zaragoza, where he visits his parents and his girlfriend Marina, with whom he breaks up. He goes to Madrid to pursue his doctorate and meets Don Aureliano, a professor of Histology, whose laboratory he frequents and with whom he discusses micrography. With his savings from his captain's pay, he buys his first microscope. He fails the competitive examinations for a professorship. During this time, he suffers from a persistent cough and, finally, two bouts of vomiting, leading to his admission to a sanatorium in the Pyrenees, where he encounters Nuria, whom he had met in Catalonia. He devotes himself to photography and reading, but suffers from severe depression and no longer wants to live. The doctor informs him that the hemoptysis has stopped and that Nuria has died. This gives him the strength to face death.
