RAMÓN Y CAJAL, padre de la NEUROCIENCIA. VIDA y OBRA
Santiago Ramón y Cajal was born on May 1, 1852, in Petilla de Aragón, Spain. He was a Spanish physician and researcher considered one of the fathers of modern neuroscience. He studied medicine at the University of Zaragoza and then joined the Spanish Army as a military doctor. In 1883, Ramón y Cajal began working in the histology laboratory at the University of Madrid, where he began studying the structure of the brain. In 1887, he published his first article on the structure of nerve cells and how they communicate with each other. Over the next few years, Ramón y Cajal made numerous important discoveries in the field of neuroscience. He demonstrated that nerve cells are not continuously connected to each other, but rather communicate through specialized connections called synapses. He also described the structure of various parts of the brain, including the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex. In 1906, Ramón y Cajal received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the structure of the nervous system and continued working in the field of neuroscience until his death in 1934. His work on the structure of the nervous system and communication between nerve cells laid the foundation for modern neuroscience, and his artistic talent also left a lasting legacy in the visual representation of the brain.
