You can get from Nagoya to Handa/Taketoyo by either JR or Meitetsu, but the JR Taketoyo Line is a single-track local line, so it's not a fair competition. However, if you start from Toyohashi, the JR line offers a shortcut of about 20km, so I thought it would be faster than taking the Meitetsu Rapid Express all the way to Jingumae and then transferring to an express train bound for Kawa.
