The Battle of Fort Magruder: Battle of Williamsburg 1862

JOIN THE COMMUNITY!   / discord   SUPPORT THE CHANNEL!   / warhawkyt   After the month-long Siege of Yorktown, both Johnston's and McClellan's armies are on the move - the former withdrawing towards Richmond, the latter in hot pursuit trying to stop them from reaching the Confederate capital. As Johnston's army passes through the historic colonial town of Williamsburg, Major General James Longstreet's Division settles into the defensive works and fortifications outside the town. Longstreet's Division is to act as a rearguard for the rest of Johnston's withdrawing army and slow-moving wagon trains, bogged down in the muddy roads and rainstorms. And so, on May 5th, 1862, the lead elements of McClellan's Army of the Potomac clash with Longstreet's rearguard south of Williamsburg. The ensuing battle in the muddy, misty, rainy forests around Williamsburg and Fort Magruder will be the first pitched battle of the Peninsula Campaign. Longstreet must hold the Union at bay long enough for Johnston's other divisions to escape further up the Peninsula. And so begins the bloody battle to buy time.
