Protected by rocky formations, it offers a calmer environment compared to other beaches that are more exposed to the wind. Throughout the 20th century, Playa Chica witnessed significant tourism development. The beach began to gain popularity in the 1930s, when Mar del Plata became established as one of Argentina’s most famous seaside destinations. 🎈 Maral Explanada Towers Standing out in the area are the three Maral Explanada Towers, the first sustainable residential buildings in South America. This group of three towers was built on the same block where the old Hotel Explanada once stood, though many people know them as the Pelli Towers or the “Crystal Towers.” Designed by César Pelli, the project showcases a distinctive architectural style characterized by technological innovation, modern aesthetics, elegance, functionality, and respect for the surrounding urban landscape. Among Pelli’s most famous works are the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), the renovation of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Gran Torre Santiago in Chile, the Torre de Cristal in Madrid, and the Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao. 🌳 San Martín Park San Martín Park was created in 1937 when then-Governor Manuel Fresco allocated nearly 40,000 square meters for the establishment of a new tourist site in the coastal city. What made it stand out among other parks and plazas was a curious feature — it abandoned symmetry and made use of the area’s natural resources, becoming a truly unique place. Before receiving its final name, the park was known as Parque de los Próceres (“Park of the Heroes”). For its construction, grass from the old Paseo General Paz, which was being demolished at the time, was reused. Landscape designer Primavesi employed Italian and Spanish immigrants to carry out the redesign work, which included the addition of a pond, lighting, and pathways. In 1972, the statue of General José de San Martín was placed in the park. From that moment on, it officially became San Martín Park, in honor of the “Liberator of the Americas.” 🏛 Soulignac Residence The Soulignac Residence is a picturesque chalet with English and Norman inspiration, located in front of Playa Grande and San Martín Park. It was built in 1943 by Eugenio Marazzato for María Luisa Wollmann and Alberto Enrique Soulignac de Lemos Ibáñez. The chalet was designed by Alberto Marshall, who began his career as a draftsman in the studio of Alula Baldassarini, where he adopted much of his picturesque architectural influence. 🗺️ Playa Grande Playa Grande is one of the most emblematic beaches of Mar del Plata, Argentina. Its history is deeply tied to the city’s tourism boom and the development of beach culture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the city expanded and Mar del Plata became increasingly popular as a summer resort, Playa Grande grew into one of the main tourist attractions on the coast. 🏖️ Escollera Norte Together with the Escollera Sur, these large concrete breakwaters not only frame the artificial harbor but have also become iconic landmarks of Mar del Plata. The northern breakwater, measuring nearly 1,100 meters, was inaugurated in 1924. It remains one of the favorite spots for tourists, anglers, locals, and those who come to wave goodbye to or welcome arriving ships. 🌳 Paseo Toribio de Luzuriaga The stone pedestrian path that runs along Playa Chica has a name — Paseo Toribio de Luzuriaga.
