ALIAS: Marplanautasxelmundo CVU: 0000076500000025540574 ⛪ We begin our tour at El Torreón del Monje (The Monk's Tower), one of the city's icons. It is a building with Gothic influences, built on the rocks of Punta Piedras in 1904, which currently houses a café. It was known as Torre Pueyrredón, and previously as the Belvedere. It was Ernesto Torquinst who commissioned the construction of the medieval building to the German architect Karl Noordman. 🏃‍♀️🏃🚲 The coast is one of the most chosen places by "marplatenses" (Mar del Plata residents) for physical activity alongside this dreamy coastal landscape. Therefore, we will see many people doing various sports along our waterfront. 🧉 And if not, simply having some good mates (traditional Argentine infusion) enjoying a beautiful spring day. 🗿 We will be able to observe some busts and monuments: ➡️ The monument to the famous and popular comedian Alberto Olmedo, located 100 meters from the Maral 39 building, from where he fell and died in 1988; ➡️ The bust of Juan Manuel Fangio, the racing driver from Balcarce, in tribute to the 70th anniversary of Juan Manuel Fangio's First International Triumph in what became known as the “Torreón del Monje Circuit” and the 50th anniversary of the “Argentine Mission in Nürburgring”. The race, the Mar del Plata Grand Prix for “Special Free Force Cars,” would become F1 a few years later; ➡️ The bust of Arturo Frondizi, president of Argentina (1958-1962); the Monument to the Basque Immigrants by the sculptor Hidelberg Ferrino in Varese Beach; ➡️ Monument to the Atlantis Expedition which recalls the journey made in 1984 by five Argentines who sailed for 52 days in the Atlantic Ocean on a primitive log raft, propelled by a simple square sail and without a rudder. The expedition members set sail from Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) and, after 52 days at sea, landed on the coasts of La Guayra, in Venezuela. The raft was assembled using the method and materials used in Africa more than 3,000 years ago, thus challenging not only nature, but also history and anthropology. 🏛 On our route we will be able to see some typical marplatense chalets, most of them designed and built by Eng. Alula Baldassarini: ➡️ The Chalet Sain Michel (1925) in an Anglo-Norman Picturesque style, ➡️ Las Margaritas (1928), ➡️ La Cenicienta (1928) built by Baldassarini himself for his own family, ➡️ Villa Susuky (1928) located on the corner of Bolivar and the coast, ➡️ The chalet of Helvecia Huber de Roesli (1934), ➡️ Chalet Lita Mami (1946), ➡️ Roque Suarez Residence (Tio Curzio) (1924). Unfortunately, our city is not known for its heritage conservation; a large part of the typical chalets were demolished to build apartment towers and another large part are in a deplorable state and soon to meet the same fate. 🗺️ We also passed by where the old Hurlingham Hotel (1939) was located, a symbol of social tourism in the city. It had its peak when it was owned by the Federation of Commercial Employees and subsequently fell into decline until its demolition in 2014. 🏔️ We arrive at Cabo Corrientes, or rather, Cape of the Two Currents, since a warm current from the tropical coasts of Brazil and a frigid current from Antarctica converge here. This is also where the Tandilia mountain system disappears, sinking into the Argentine Sea.
