£200 Ham Radio Challenge: SOTA + POTA in One Day

Can you actually get on the air for SOTA and POTA without spending a fortune? In this video, I attempt my first ever Summits on the Air activation while also trying to complete a Parks on the Air activation — all in the same day, and with a total setup costing under £200. I headed out to Wendover Woods (G/CE-005 // GB-1850) with a simple, budget-friendly setup to see what’s possible with low power and minimal gear. The SOTA activation was carried out on 2m using just 5W and a HB9CV antenna… while the POTA attempt on 20m used a tiny QRP HF setup putting out just 2.5W. It didn’t all go perfectly — but that’s kind of the point. This video is all about showing that you don’t need expensive gear to get out, experiment, and enjoy amateur radio. 🎙️ Radio: Baofeng UV-5R (SOTA) / uSDX QRP HF Radio (POTA) 📡 Power: 5W (2m) / 2.5W (20m) 🪫 Setup: HB9CV antenna (2m) / Telescopic HF antenna (20m) 📍 Location: Wendover Woods (G/CE-05 / GB-1850) 👉 Subscribe for more approachable amateur radio adventures!
