Using the Isle of Wight's Only Repeater (After a Few Mistakes...)

What do you do when you find yourself on the Isle of Wight with a Baofeng and no idea what repeaters are nearby? In this video, I use the RepeaterBook app to track down the details of GB3IW, the Isle of Wight's only amateur radio repeater, before attempting to program my Baofeng UV-5R Mini and get on the air. What should have been a simple exercise quickly turned into a bit of a struggle. Between manually entering repeater offsets and wrestling with DTMF commands, there was certainly some user error involved! In fact, I eventually gave up on the DTMF side of things altogether. Despite the challenges, we managed to make two contacts and get on the air in the beautiful Isle of Wight sunshine! It's a great reminder that amateur radio doesn't always go to plan, but that's often where the fun is. And with a handheld radio, a repeater directory, and a bit of persistence, you can get on the air almost anywhere. 🎙️ Radio: Baofeng UV-5R Mini 📡 Power: 5W 🪫 Setup: Handheld radio using GB3IW repeater 📍 Location: Isle of Wight, UK 👉 Subscribe for more approachable amateur radio adventures!
