But he turns away from wisdom because of the lust of his heart. He is worse than the mocker because he hates knowledge itself—it hinders his passions. Verse 28 describes the fall: at first, wisdom is still close by; they call, but it doesn't answer. Then it becomes completely distant, and they search diligently for it, but find it not. Verse 29: They hated knowledge because they did not choose the fear of God. And this is the key idea of ​​Malbim: although the laws of wisdom cannot be proven by logic, through the fear of God they can be anchored in the heart as clearly as what one sees with the eyes. Verses 30-31: They rejected both the counsel of reason and the fear of punishment—therefore, punishment will come for the act itself and for the self-calculation with which they justified evil. Verse 32: The naive will be destroyed by their own wavering minds—they sinned out of ignorance; they have a share in the world to come.
