The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8. Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. 9. For they are a beautiful crown for your head, and a chain for your neck. 10. My son, if sinners tempt you, do not consent to them. 11. If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for bloodshed, let us waylay the innocent without cause..." 📜 MALBIM ANALYSIS Malbim explains: wisdom (chochma) cannot be derived from the human mind. Its source is the Almighty. Therefore, "the beginning of knowledge" is not logic or experience, but awe of God: the awareness that there is a King above you. A "fool" (evil) in Malbim is not someone who knows little. He is a skeptic who doubts everything and therefore despises wisdom. His problem is not intellect, but pride: he has set himself up as a judge of truth. "Father's instruction" and "mother's teaching" are two channels for the transmission of wisdom. He who breaks away from tradition stands alone against all the temptations of the world. And then come the "sinners" (verse 10)—those who offer quick results that circumvent the Creator's laws. 🔮 DEPTH: THE VILNA GAON The Vilna Gaon reveals: "the father's instruction" is the Written Torah, received from the Almighty, and "the mother's teaching" is the Oral Torah, transmitted by the sages of Israel. A person needs both, just as a child needs a father and mother. "A crown for the head and a necklace for the neck"—the Gaon explains: the wisdom of the Torah adorns both thought (the head) and speech and action (the neck—the channel between the head and the body). True wisdom is seen not in words, but in behavior. And regarding the "sinners," the Gaon says: this is how the evil inclination works. It never offers evil right away. First, "come with us," simply join. Then, a small compromise. Then, "an ambush for blood."
