EU accession process could be streamlined, not just for Ukraine | Katarína Mathernová
Ukraine, which officially opened the first EU membership negotiation cluster last week, has frequently voiced hopes that the negotiation process can somehow be “fast-tracked,” although the suggestion received a lukewarm reception from most other European countries. “I think there is a lot of discussions on how to make the accession to the EU a little more modern,” Katarína Mathernová, EU Ambassador to Ukraine, told TVP World, pointing out that the accession process has remained the same since the 1986 expansion of the European Communities, which preceded the formation of the EU. She also added that Ukraine has been implementing reforms meant to bring it closer to the EU since the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, and further reforms after the outbreak of the full-scale war with Russia in 2022. “So there is certainly scope to make the process more agile and more adapted to the accelerated age that we live in,” Mathernová added, stressing that a way should be found to “balance the reform demands and reforms that have been taking place with the geopolitical challenge and opportunity that Ukrainian membership entails.” Join our host, Maciej Mikos and his guest as they discuss the possibility of “fast-tracking” Ukraine’s membership and whether introducing some form of “associate membership” might be an alternative to that, the historical spat between Warsaw and Kyiv, and how much of a hurdle to Ukraine’s accession can integrating its agricultural sector turn out to be. #accession #eu #ukraine 🔴 Watch our 24/7 livestream - https://youtube.com/live/m4mVcUReR6Y Bringing you all the latest daily news and updates, TVP World is Poland's first English-language channel where you can find world news as seen from the Polish perspective and the latest news from the CEE region.
