Zelenskyy could have resolved the history spat with Poland better | Kira Rudik

The Polish-Ukrainian historical dispute flared up again earlier this month, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named an elite Ukrainian military unit after a formation responsible for massacring some 100,000 Polish civilians during World War II. He subsequently mailed Poland’s highest decoration via a private courier service, after his Polish counterpart, Karol Nawrocki, announced that he was stripping him of the order. Zelenskyy will also not attend the 5th Ukraine Recovery Conference hosted in the Polish city of Gdańsk, sending Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to represent Kyiv at the event instead. “I wish that the president had taken a different approach in the situation in terms of trying to de-escalate the situation rather than to escalate. (...) I think the return of the order (...) was a step for escalation,” Kira Rudik, a Ukrainian MP for The Voice party, told TVP World, while at the same time stressing that Ukraine should not be expected to consult such matters with every neighbor it may have a painful historical relationship with, while also stressing that no Ukrainian political party runs on an anti-Polish platform. “And perhaps it should have been reconsidered. (...) I think that what should have happened is the president should have come to Gdańsk and attended the conference (...) and perhaps gave a speech that would try and help de-escalation and move forward in an absolutely different manner,” the Ukrainian MP added.
