天武・持統天皇陵　盗掘で被葬者がわかった古墳

This is the Archaeology Channel. This video introduces the tombs of Emperor Tenmu and Jitō. The tombs of Emperor Tenmu and Jitō are located in Noguchi, Asuka Village. They are one of the few kofun where the identities of their burial corpses have been identified. Until the early Meiji period, Maruyama Tomb was designated as the tomb of the two individuals. However, with the discovery of the "Abuki-no-Yamaryō-ki" (Records of the Afuki Mountain Reiji) in the Meiji period, the current kofun was designated as the site. The tomb of Emperor Tenmu and Jitō appears to have been octagonal, built in five tiers. Each side of the base of the mound is approximately 15 meters, the distance between opposite sides is 37 meters, and the height is 7.7 meters. The stonework appears to be tuff from Mt. Nijo. Records also indicate the existence of a bridge, suggesting that a moat surrounded the tomb. The stone chamber opens to the south and is described as consisting of two rooms: an inner sanctuary and an outer sanctuary. The passage is 3 meters square and 2.1 meters high, with a single ceiling stone. The stone used for the stone chamber is recorded as "horse laurel," but it appears that quartz diorite was used instead. A gilt-bronze double door separated the chamber from the main chamber, and it appears to have had six decorative metal fittings. The main chamber was 3m wide, 4.5m deep, and 2.1m high, and was entirely painted vermilion. Emperor Tenmu's coffin, visible on the left, was a vermilion-painted gilt-bronze coffin placed on a gilt-bronze base measuring 2.1m long, 75cm wide, 75cm high, and 1.5cm thick. Remains of his skull, arm and leg bones, and parts of his crimson clothing appear to have remained inside the coffin. Empress Jitō's remains were placed in a gilt-bronze bucket placed on a table-shaped stand, which contained a silver box. Details of the gilt-bronze bucket and silver box, such as their shape and size, and how they were arranged, are unknown.
