【牽牛子塚古墳】真の斉明天皇陵 ? 圧巻の八角墳

This is the Archaeology Channel. This video explains about Kengyokozuka Tomb. Kengyokozuka Tomb is an octagonal tomb built at the tip of a low hill known as Mayumi Hill in the northwest of Asuka Village. The tomb was severely damaged, but after excavation and investigation, it was fully restored and opened to the public in March 2022. The mound is constructed in three tiers, with the first tier measuring approximately 9 meters on a side, the second tier approximately 6.5 meters, and the third tier approximately 4 meters, and is estimated to be approximately 4.5 meters high. The octagonal tomb, covered entirely in white tuff, has a completely different appearance from the tombs we are used to seeing, and is truly reminiscent of a pyramid. Based on artifacts and other findings, Kengyokozuka Tomb is estimated to have been built in the late 7th century. The deceased was buried in an octagonal tomb, the type used for imperial tombs. Furthermore, an entry in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) states that Princess Ota was buried in front of Ochi-no-oka no Ueno Misasagi, where Empress Saimei and Princess Hashihito were buried together. This matches the circumstances at Kengyokozuka Tomb and Koshizuka Mikado Tomb, leading to the prevailing theory that Empress Saimei and Princess Hashihito are buried in Kengyokozuka Tomb, and Princess Ota is buried in Koshizuka Mikado Tomb. Five octagonal tombs have been identified in the Kinki region. All of these are likely to be imperial tombs, and are thought to be in the form of imperial tombs built between the late 7th century and the early 8th century. Kengyokozuka Tomb, in particular, is not only fully restored, but is also the only octagonal tomb that can be viewed up close. Its splendor is truly something you should experience for yourself.
