BobBlast 531 - "Together is Better"

This weekly BobBlast is how I paint humans in a relationship—a story. As a painter, did you know you are a story teller? Your paintings represent you and your relationship with your thoughts and your message. I have found that including human shapes in my paintings, the message is clearer, more memorable and tell a better story. For me—a solitary figure feels either alone, regal or sad. When I add another figure, or a group of figures, I feel the energy of community, a society, family, lovers… I am telling a story. In this BobBlast, I go through the familiar steps before I start a painting: •Starting with journaling and writing my goals •Determining the title (so I know when the painting is finished) •Sketching ideas in my sketchbook Watch the demo to see me practice painting a figure—I call them my "carrot people"—suggesting figures in motion. I also demonstrate the Rembrandt-style lighting for the figure. It is all based on lights and darks. After practicing with one figure, I add another figure in the painting… expanding the story and the experience me and the viewer. When painting two or more figures in the same painting, be mindful of the implied relationship between the two figures and also the spatial relationship. Are they touching? Are they both in motion?
