January Tornadoes No One Expected | Tornadoes of January 1999
In the opening weeks of 1999—deep in the heart of winter—the atmosphere across the United States turned violent in a way few people expected. While most remember May 3, 1999 and the Bridge Creek–Moore F5, another historic chapter was already unfolding months earlier. In January 1999, a relentless and highly unusual weather pattern triggered three consecutive tornado outbreaks, producing a record-shattering 216 tornadoes across 13 states. Communities from the Gulf Coast to the Mid-South were hit hard—often after dark—leaving 18 dead, hundreds injured, and thousands forced to rebuild. Now, nearly 30 years later, January 1999 remains the most active January for tornadoes ever recorded in the United States.
