Hottest, Brightest, Largest & Heaviest Record Holding Stars | Extreme Astronomy

What is the biggest star in the universe? What is the hottest star ever found? Which star has the highest mass? And which star produces the most light? In this video, we explore some of the most extreme stars ever discovered — from the gigantic red hypergiant Stephenson 2-18, to the terrifyingly hot Wolf–Rayet star WR 102, to the record-breaking monster star R136a1 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Stephenson 2-18 was once considered one of the largest stars ever found. Its estimated size is so enormous that nearly 10 billion Suns could fit inside it by volume. But newer studies suggest that its size may not be as certain as we once thought. That brings us to WOH G64, a massive red hypergiant in the Large Magellanic Cloud, now considered one of the most reliable candidates for the largest known star. Then we look at WR 102, one of the hottest known stars in the universe, with a surface temperature of nearly 2,10,000 degree Celsius. This extreme Wolf–Rayet star has lost its outer layers and is now exposing its incredibly hot inner regions. It is losing mass through powerful stellar winds and may end its life in a supernova. Finally, we explore R136a1, one of the most massive and most luminous stars ever discovered. With a mass around 291 times that of the Sun and a luminosity around 72 lakh times the Sun, R136a1 challenges our old understanding of how massive a star can become. It is also a Wolf–Rayet star, but very different from WR 102.
