We know that there are billions of galaxies in our universe and billions of stars in each of them. We have even taken a picture of a galaxy 32 billion light years away. That means even the light from such a distance has enough energy to reach us. If so, the light of these billions of stars must also be falling on the earth. So, it is quite reasonable to ask why nights are still dark.
