Ken McNabb - Spurs (Part 1)

In Part 1 of this series on spurs, we are demonstrating spur use and discussing their parts and design. Spur Shank Length General rule of thumb - the taller you are, the longer your spur shank length should be. The shorter your legs, the shorter your spur shank length. Shape of the Shank This really comes down to personal preference. Some people like curved types, some people prefer something straight. Spur Use For me, the spur is not used for forward movement or correction. I use my spurs for the ability to press more specific buttons on his ribcage, and to encourage collection. I also prefer to roll my spurs rather than jab them. Spur Rowels In general, the bigger the rowel, the less severe it is, because pressure is distributed. Some rowels have pointed edges, and some have dull edges. I like to take spur rowels in my hands and squeeze them to see what they feel like. Even so, it all comes down to how you use the spurs to determine how aggressive they are going to be. Band Width This also comes down to personal preference.
