02:01 Feeling like an extension of my student life 04:21 Matrix 09:28 The times are fluid, moving towards openness 11:16 Both have their pros and cons 12:02 100-year life 12:26 The answer varies from person to person 14:35 Unable to escape conventional wisdom Today, I'll be discussing the themes of "school refusal, transferring schools, taking a leave of absence, and changing jobs." Whether school refusal, transferring schools, taking a leave of absence, or changing jobs is appropriate depends on each individual case, but before considering each case individually, there are some points you should keep in mind. When a child who is refusing to go to school comes to my clinic with their family, or when a new employee comes to the clinic as a parent and child after taking a leave of absence shortly after joining the company, I'd like to talk about what I value and why I believe "what not to say could cause unnecessary anxiety and misunderstandings, worsening depression." ■Feeling like an extension of my student life After graduating from the National Defense Medical College, I joined the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. I left the Self-Defense Forces midway through my career, working at a private hospital before opening my own practice. The Self-Defense Forces felt like a school, with constant training and study. Even after becoming a doctor, I continued studying for qualifications, so even in society, I always felt like I was in school. It wasn't until I opened my own practice that my perspective finally began to shift and I realized, "Is this really what society is like?" Until then, I felt like an extension of my student days. Not in the sense of being irresponsible, but rather, I was obsessed with the idea that I had to keep learning, advance in that culture, and improve my skills. However, I think this is true not only for me, but for people who have worked under a lifetime employment system. But people today are no longer like this. They have to consider career plans that assume job changes. This fact is not widely known, and I think it's difficult for people in school to see a society where job changes are a given. When I feel depressed or stop going to school, I don't focus on these things. ■Matrix I drew a diagram based on two axes: high/low human resource mobility, and high/low group membership. Rather than thinking on a single axis of pros and cons, adding another axis will give you a different perspective. If you're stuck on a problem, it's a good idea to consider two axes. ・Student-disciple relationship (closed and small group) It's similar to a parent-child relationship, but in a master-disciple relationship, learning extends to all aspects of life. Everything, from food to clothing, is influenced by the master. It's closed and small group. There are some things you learn that can only be conveyed in this way. ・Online salons, events (open and large group) The complete opposite of the master-disciple relationship is online salons, online events, seminars, etc. There are more people, there's turnover, and it's open. ・Dormitory life I lived in a dormitory at the National Defense Medical College, which was a closed and narrow community. As a member of the Self-Defense Forces, we had uniforms and set meals. Furthermore, the things we had to study were also set. ・School Although not as closed as the Self-Defense Forces, school (elementary, middle, and high school) is also a closed environment. ・Lifetime employment A company with lifetime employment is similar to school. Religion Religious organizations are also closed and have large memberships. The world is moving from a closed world to a more open world (higher mobility). When it comes to studying, there are online salons and online groups, etc. As for work, we are moving toward a world where job changes are common, so on the matrix, we are moving toward "more open, with fewer peers (individual career decisions)." ■The times are moving toward a more fluid, more open world Older generations moved from the bottom right to the top right of the "school to lifetime employment" matrix. Because they lived in a closed world for so long, they are very resistant to things like skipping school or taking a leave of absence. I think it's very frightening. However, this is not actually the case. The world is moving toward a more fluid world, and transferring schools, skipping school, taking a leave of absence, and changing jobs are becoming commonplace, so nothing particularly abnormal is happening. However, this may be incomprehensible to those whose only world is school, lifetime employment, and family. By the way, in the medical field, counseling would be in the bottom right. Therapist-client relationships are similar to those of a master-disciple relationship, while outpatient psychiatry is typically in the upper left (large numbers and open). Visiting an outpatient clinic with the lower right in mind might feel strange, while recei...
