Spotter Day at Istrana Air Base for SIFEX 2025: Swiss F/A-18, USAF F-16, Italian F-35A & Typhoon!

Last Tuesday I went to Istrana Air Base, in the North of Italy, for a day of plane spotting organized by the Italian 51º Stormo during the SIFEX 2025 (Swiss Italy Flight Execise), a joint three-weeks training between the Italian and the Swiss Air Force with the aim to improve interoperability and make an essential contribution to strengthening the defence capacity of the Swiss Army through international cooperation. After last year's edition, Istrana has been chosen again by the Swiss Air Force as a logistics base for this training which saw the participation of some of their F/A-18 Hornets, the Eurofighter Typhoons of the 51º Stormo, some Italian F-35A Lightning IIs (from the 6º Stormo of Ghedi) and some F-16 Fighting Falcons of the US Air Force, stationed in the nearby Aviano. The day opened with the flyover of some F-16s followed by the departures of some Typhoons and F/A-18 for the first training mission and their subsequent return at Istrana Air Base. The Swiss pilots made a second quick outing around lunchtime to conclude the day with a third mission, again together with the Eurofighters. In the midst of these activities there was also a visit from an F-35A.
