This happened during the reign of King Ahasuerus, who ruled over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Cush. 2. At that time King Ahasuerus ascended the throne in the palace of Susa. 3. In the third year of his reign, he gave a banquet for all his officials and subjects. The commanders of Persia and Media, and the nobles and officials of every province were all present before him. 4. For many days, that is, for one hundred and eighty days, he displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendidness of his majesty. 5. After these days were over, the king also [gave] to the people of high and low in the city of Susa. He held a banquet for seven days in the courtyard of the royal palace. 6. He hung white, green, and blue curtains with fine purple cords on the marble pillars and silver rings. He set up chairs made of gold and silver on the ground paved with slabs of stone, white stone, mica, and black stone. 7. He made them drink from gold cups, each cup being of a different shape. The king was abundant, so there was no end to the royal wine. 8. There was a rule regarding the drinking, so that no one was compelled to do it.
