Singapore. Kampong Loyang Community Centre, March 1968 - Film 90070

Singapore late 1960's. The exterior of 'Kampong Loyang Community Centre', part of a 'Selamat Datang' is visible above the sign. A wooden hut with blue and yellow doors and window panes and an attap roof nestled amid coconut trees and other greenery. A small cluster of similar wooden houses on stilts. Some Malay toddlers, probably with their grandparents, walk through the trees to the colourful house. Three young girls sitting on a bench notice the camera; one grins widely at it. Children play on a swing made from a plank suspended from trees by ropes. A group of children walk past a colourful building which may be a mosque, with a blue corrugated iron roof, a maroon dome, yellow walls and a green minaret. Smoke from a burning pile somewhere rises over the roofs of houses and into the trees. A man and a young girl squat on the ground, the former drawing things in the sand with a stick. A dark, bare-torsoed old man under a broad-rimmed sun hat wheels a bicycle loaded with green coconuts down a path. Some boys kick around a wooden rattan ball in the concrete playing court outside what might be the community centre or the school; the national crest of Singapore is visible on the walls.
