El Mundo Desde el Sur 22JUL2026: CHILE: ¿LEY DE RECONSTRUCCIÓN NACIONAL O MÁS DEUDA INTERNACIONAL?

The Chilean government has presented the so-called National Reconstruction Law, which was controversially approved by the Chilean Senate. Its main objective is to attract investment by reducing taxes on the country's largest corporations, from the current 27% to 23%. This would mean an annual loss of US$3 billion in Chilean state revenue. Another justification for this so-called mega-reform is to increase GDP growth. However, while lowering taxes for the wealthy, the government itself is asking Congress to authorize US$6.2 billion in debt in 2026 to try to cover the alleged deficit left by the previous administration.
