Beethoven: Triple Concerto. Géza Anda, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, & Pierre Fournier - soloists. (1961)
This is one of the less frequently heard works for orchestra by Beethoven, certainly less than the symphonies. The Radio Symphonie Orchester Berlin along with pianist Géza Anda, violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and cellist Pierre Fournier give a crisp performance of this work. This is one of the earlier stereo recordings of Deutsche Grammophon. DG again provides its usual excellence in engineering on this LP. The intimate almost chamber orchestra feel of this concerto (Opus 56) presents a stark contrast to the sweeping and grand 3rd Symphony (Opus 55) that was published immediately proceeding the concerto. I would note that Pierre Fournier was married to pianist Ginette Doyen, who is one of the forgotten pianists I feature on my channel.) (It is also so very 1961 to choose for the cover photo, one that has Géza Anda with the stub of a cigarette in his mouth!)
