"Secrets Under the City": Protecting Bristol's Medieval Heritage

Imagine carrying the weight of a whole city… This is the case for the nearly 700-year-old Grade 1 listed church of St. John on the Wall, Bristol. Being the last remaining of five churches built into Bristol’s city wall in the Middle Ages, a lot has changed for St. John’s since the 13th Century. The whole weight of the old city of Bristol is pressing against this church on one side, with nothing to hold it on the other side. External factors including heavy traffic is also causing the church floor to shake and slowly move and this tension is causing cracking in the vaulted ceiling of St. John’s hidden crypt. Without timely intervention, this special place could be lost to future generations – and with it an important chapter of Bristol’s history would vanish. St. John on the Wall is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. As a registered charity we need your help to conserve this special gem.
