The Jews of Medieval Norwich (Student Film)
My final project for the Media Learning Company at CCN (reuploaded due to uploading errors). In 1080, a community of 200 people thrived in what was known then as Norwich’s Jewish quarter. Employed as moneylenders by the king, they aided Norwich’s prosperity as it grew into the second biggest city in England. Then in 1290, they vanished. In this documentary, I want to turn back the clock to those early days right after the Norman conquest, trek through the streets of Norwich’s medieval Jewry, and follow them right to the bitter end in 1290: when all Jews were expelled from England and Wales. For the next 366 years, there was no established Jewish community in England- let alone Norwich- but the legacy of this small East-Anglian community extends much further than we think. The events that took place right here in 1144, 1190 and 1235 can be felt throughout the world and, though we may not know it, affect our lives today.
