“Don’t stress me out, driving on the left is not easy at all…” And this is how our Australian adventure officially begins: not with a sparkling sunset over the ocean, not with a kangaroo crossing the road, but with me behind the wheel trying to understand where the traffic is coming from in the centre of Melbourne, while Nicola comments on every scare as if he were sitting on a sofa, remote control in hand. But let’s be honest: he is not exactly NASA’s chief engineer either when it comes to figuring out the camper van equipment. Before even picking up the vehicle, the mission already feels worthy of an urban survival reality show: taking the bikes to be assembled, loading them onto the train together with two months’ worth of luggage, getting off at the right stop, reaching the rental place by bike and then driving through traffic to the spot where we left Lucia, our driver, waiting for us. At the first possible stop, we finally inspect the camper van: big, white, full of hidden compartments and buttons with mysterious functions. After a full-on battle with bikes, bags and impossible arrangements, we even manage to fit everything inside: not comfortably, not elegantly, but it all fits. And that already feels like a victory. Evening falls over Victoria, it is colder than we ordered, and we inaugurate our new life as camper van rookies with a deliberately Italian dinner: “ravioli or gnocchi?”. Because you can be on the other side of the world, driving on the left and sleeping in a house on wheels… but in front of the first lit stove, the real question is always the same: how much gas has to come out before the detector starts beeping?
