💬Hold tight: today we begin our first real stretch by bike in Australia. And of course, it couldn’t be a normal day. Before even getting in the saddle, we pass through farms, dairy products and temptations: fudge, soft sweets, genuine flavours that remind us that even here you can find surprising food tours. And we need that energy, because finally… we ride. Our first bike stretch winds through towns nobody would ever film: wide roads, gravel sections, endless highways and animal sightings. It’s a rough, everyday Australia, crossing us as much as we cross it — until the camper vanishes from sight… and who knows where Lucia has ended up! Keeping us company is “All The Way To Me”, a country-folk song with a banjo that seems to be pedalling behind us. The lyrics speak of distance, fear, protection, invisible threads crossing seas and miles. Like certain journeys: they make us leave a bond behind only to discover that it can still reach us. And in the end, we get our driver back! So we celebrate the reunion with an ice-cold beer in a pub, pretending everything is under control. Inexperience is understandable, but we need a strategy: stop every five kilometres to check we are on the same route. Looking for Lucia by bike across Australia would be too much even for us. Though we laugh, we are still shaken: two on bikes, one behind the wheel, aware of the distance. In the end, what does it matter? “All the way to me”: “To me, through the whole journey.” Maybe that’s how it is: even on Australian highways, under the blazing sun, driving on the left among trucks, something brings three friends back together. We meet over dinner, with an absurd story and one certainty: we are not good at finding our way around this continent, but good at getting lost without disappearing.
