The bakeries are excellent, the takeaways surprisingly good, and with 100 Seychellois rupees — less than six euros — you can put together a fresh meal without giving up flavor. Anse Source d’Argent and Anse Marron are among the most iconic places in La Digue, and to reach them you need to enter L’Union Estate National Park, paying an entrance fee of 150 rupees. But as soon as the white sand, transparent water and granite rocks appear, every doubt disappears. Here, we say it as a very personal opinion — with the Italian hand gesture even under the sea — the Seychelles beat the Caribbean of Central America: for water clarity, colors, reflections and that rare feeling of being inside a nature still capable of amazement. All you need is a snorkel to forget the clock. You don’t necessarily need scuba diving: sometimes it is enough to float, observe, follow the fish, chase the turtles and let yourself drift over a seabed fading into turquoise. And it is right there, under the surface, that the heart starts beating again for a kind of wonder that can only be contemplated. We swam until we lost track of time, until our backs got sunburned under the afternoon sun. All that remains is the warm water, the light, the slow breath inside the mask, and Nicola who, even among fish and turtles, asks the sea with his fingers: “What is all this?” At sunset, we got back on our bikes, crossing a vanilla plantation with its flowers just closed for the evening.
