Today I had feathered company in the form of a roadrunner at breakfast—very funny and not at all shy. Of course, I didn't feed it! Today I'm off to Zion National Park. Theoretically, I could have taken a longer detour to the north side of the Grand Canyon, but due to the massive fire, the road is closed and everything is destroyed. So, no Grand Canyon for me today. I still don't arrive at Zion National Park until just before 4 p.m. I've booked an expensive cabin for the next two nights; the campsites were booked up for months. In Utah, the blood alcohol limit is 0.08, but you're allowed to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, which I take advantage of for the short trip to the supermarket. A strange feeling, kind of like being naked. I take advantage of the good campground facilities; I have a 500g filet mignon with salad and a beer. Today's distance: 239 km October 8, 2025 Zion National Park, Angels Landing hike, Park Boulevard I get up at 5:30 a.m., have breakfast, and head to the park. Again, no entrance fee! Despite the shutdown, electric buses are running from the park entrance, taking me to the Angels Landing Trailhead. I take advantage of the opportunity and hike the 3.2 km up to Angels Landing. The last 700 m are very steep and narrow with a risk of falling (14 fatal accidents since 2000). There's a chain almost the entire way, which you can and should hold onto! I reach the top at 9:30 a.m. and it took me a good 45 minutes. At the top, I treat myself to a cinnamon roll, which immediately attracts a swarm of chipmunks, who are quite persistent. I sit there for at least an hour, admiring the fantastic view and the amusing chipmunks. Afterwards, I hike to the three Emerald Pools, not as spectacular, but still a nice hike. In the end, it was 620 meters of elevation gain and 10 km. ... The day isn't full yet, so I'm going to ride my motorcycle along Highway 89 (Park Boulevard), which runs above the park and offers some beautiful views. It's normally a $30 toll, but the ranger at the entrance booth said it's free (because of the shutdown). I'm at my cabin so early today that I can eat while it's still light and enjoy the approaching sunset. Today's ride: 39 km
