In this video I' m in Raiano, a municipality in the province of L' Aquila in Abruzzo located in the western part of the Peligna Valley, where I went on 17 May 2024 to ring the bells on the occasion of the solemn patronal celebrations in honor of Sant 'Antonio abbot and San Venanzio martyr. It all took place at the parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore which is the main place of worship in the city. Built in the second half of the 15th century and consecrated in 1470, it was destroyed by the Majella earthquake of 1706. The current building is the result of a Baroque-style reconstruction which took place between the 18th and 19th centuries, made necessary to accommodate an increasingly numerous population . The monumental façade is divided by vertical pilasters and cornices. The interior has three naves, with flat vaults, cut by a transept divided into two chapels. The naves are separated by pillars and punctuated by numerous altars on which numerous paintings and the interesting statues of San Venanzio, the Dead Christ and the Madonna della Neve stand out. The presbytery ends in a polygonal shape. The first altar of the left nave has a statue of San Sebastiano, the second that of San Rocco, the third the painting of the Holy Family by Domenico Mazzullo. In the fourth altar there is the prestigious and valuable eighteenth-century statue of the Patron Saint San Venanzio Martire. The sumptuous altar dates back to 1797, with a canvas by Vincenzo Conti; the choir is carved in walnut by master Bencivenga. There are many finds from the ancient church destroyed by the earthquake before the Baroque construction, such as the statue of the Madonna and Child and the seventeenth-century canvas of San Biagio. The serrated bell tower is the preserved medieval element; in its belfry it houses 3 bells mounted in a swing system and equipped with an electric striker. In the brickwork at the base of the front window where the main bell is located there is the following inscription "AVGYSTVM HOC PINNACVLVM BVS ECCLESIE IN HANC FO MAM INDVSTRIA ET DILIGE RRINATII DE TVRRI TIIS PROCVRATORIS E VIT PERFECTVM A. D. MDCXXX" thus partly translated "THIS GREAT PINNACOLO (CUSP) OF THE BELL TOWER WAS FINISHED BUILDING BY THE BENEFACTORS OF THE CHURCH IN THIS FORM AND ORNATED DILIGENTLY AND WITH KNOWLEDGE WHILE HE WAS PROCURATOR ... IN 1630". The bell tower was once surmounted by a pinnacle which was dismantled by the De Michele family for fear of it falling into the nearby building. The bells currently ring only by hammer and it is hoped that they will be reactivated soon.
