As the KOSPI surged early in the session, a buy-side circuit breaker was triggered for the 15th time this year. The driving force behind today's surge in the KOSPI was the announcement of "record-breaking" earnings by Micron, the largest semiconductor company in the U.S. While the New York stock market closed mixed amid concerns over the overvaluation of AI stocks, Micron's announcement of record-breaking earnings after the market close completely reversed the market sentiment. Micron rose nearly 16% in after-hours trading, and this influence led to strong gains in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Samsung Electronics, which reclaimed the top spot in market capitalization after skyrocketing nearly 10% yesterday, rose another 5.3% today and closed in the 350,000 won range. SK Hynix surged 13.1% to close in the 2.9 million won range. Institutional investors led the KOSPI surge with net purchases exceeding 3.3 trillion won. Yesterday, the rate closed in the 1,540 won range for the first time in 17 years, and the high exchange rate in the 1,540 won range has continued for two consecutive days. With the recent sharp rise in the exchange rate, concerns about a high rate are growing both inside and outside the foreign exchange market. Recently, international oil prices have fallen to levels seen before the Iran war due to expectations of the Strait of Hormuz opening and the easing of supply concerns. August delivery Brent crude futures closed at $74 per barrel, down 4%, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures closed at $70 per barrel, also down 4%.
