[앵커 한마디] G7 + 한국 = G8 / JTBC 뉴스룸

"Soft power is not coercion or bargaining. It is the ability to obtain what you want through charm." 'Soft power' stands in contrast to 'hard power,' which refers to military and economic strength. This is a remark made a few years ago by Joseph Nye, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, who established the concept. He also offered an interesting analogy regarding the end of the Cold War. "What brought down the Berlin Wall in 1989 was not military fire, but Western culture and broadcasting that moved people's hearts beyond the Iron Curtain." In particular, he highly praised Korea's 'soft power' and predicted that its success could be sustained. That prediction is being proven by numbers. In the latest global survey, Korea ranked 7th in the world for media and entertainment, including K-dramas and K-pop. We received a report card for 'soft power,' ranking 7th in product brands, 6th in future growth potential, and 5th in leadership of technological innovation. With semiconductors, automobiles, shipbuilding, and the defense industry emerging as a new pillar of global security, our 'hard power' has already risen to the ranks of a 'game changer.' Following our invitation to attend the G7 again this year, just as we did last year, voices are once again emerging from both within and outside the country calling for a move toward a 'G8 system' that includes Korea. One of the few nations in the world that possesses both 'hard power' and 'soft power'...
