Just moments ago, Micron, a U.S. semiconductor company, announced earnings for the previous quarter that exceeded market expectations by approximately 20%. Reporter Park Dae-gi reports. [Report] Micron, the world's third-largest memory semiconductor manufacturer following Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, announced its earnings for the third quarter of the fiscal year (March through May) at 5 a.m. today, Korean time. Micron's earnings per share were $25.11, and revenue was $41.5 billion. Both earnings and revenue were approximately 20% higher than market expectations. Previously, financial data firm FactSet had estimated third-quarter earnings per share at $20.70 and revenue at $35.7 billion. Micron's forecast for the next quarter is earnings per share of $30 to $32 and revenue of $49 billion to $51 billion. This is also about 20% higher than previous market forecasts. Micron's earnings effectively prove the strong demand for memory semiconductors driven by the transition to artificial intelligence. The U.S. Nasdaq index closed down 0.43% from the previous day ahead of Micron's earnings announcement. However, immediately after the announcement, Micron's stock price surged in after-hours trading. Meanwhile, international oil prices plummeted on expectations of the resumption of voyages to the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures prices fell for four consecutive days, dropping to levels seen before the outbreak of the war in Iran.
