BIG Spring Sale Now On! *** The kettlebell is an extremely versatile and powerful piece of training equipment that also happens to be one of the most misunderstood. For a lot of people, kettlebell training is associated with complicated movements like the kettlebell swing, the clean and jerk, the snatch, the Turkish get-up, and others. Make no mistake: these are excellent and powerful exercises that can develop true athleticism. Unfortunately, however, this also turns a lot of people away from kettlebells. Because the moves look complicated and because there are so many cues and tips to remember, it can be intimidating for newcomers. Especially with so much content sneering at people who have the wrong form! Then there are those bodybuilding-centric channels that look-down on the kettlebell for being too fiddly and light to build “real muscle.” Some massive names in the fitness space have made videos condemning the kettlebell for being pointless and inferior to dumbbells or barbells for hypertrophy (all while butchering basic exercises). It’s a wonder that kettlebell training has become as popular as it is! The truth about the kettlebell is that it is a different shaped dumbbell. While you can do technical movements with it, this is far from the only way to get strong with one. Like a dumbbell, it is well suited to some movements and less so to others. When I first started training with kettlebells, it was before the days of fitness social media. I just picked one up and started doing goblet curls, goblet squats, and (randomly) cross-body clean and press. For movements like the goblet curl or kettlebell halo, the unique shape of the kettlebell is perfectly suited to high-rep ranges. It promotes the use of circular movements with a continuous time under tension. Moves like the ballistic bent row and carries are easier thanks to the big handle. They’re also better for racking. And when you start using a kettlebell like THIS - it really is extremely accessible and shockingly effective. Thing is: the hypertrophy bros aren’t wrong. Kettlebells are not AS optimal as barbells or dumbbells for building big muscle. This is because their shape isn’t as well suited to SOME movements that isolate specific muscle groups. A very heavy kettlebell is a little awkward to overhead press, let’s be honest. But that’s the point: it’s not FOR pure hypertrophy. Kettlebells are great because they can offer a great deal of muscle building very conveniently - with many of the benefits of both a dumbbell AND a barbell. But they’re also great because they sit nicely in-between hypertrophy and endurance. They let you build muscle while also burning away fat to get a much more chiselled and ripped physique. And THIS is the kind of physique that most people start out wanting. It’s only social media that tends to convince us we need to optimise for hypertrophy. You don’t NEED the optimal tool for building muscle. If you want to look really good and have tons of energy, the kettlebell is actually one of the SIMPLEST ways to get there.
