Multiplying the Mission Expanding Primary Care Training Across Diverse Underserved Communities

Across the country, communities with the greatest need for primary care often lack training programs that develop and retain clinicians locally. Expanding graduate medical education into underserved areas—whether rural towns, urban neighborhoods, or neighboring counties—can be one of the most powerful ways to strengthen access to care long-term. But starting or extending training into a new community can feel overwhelming: regulatory complexity, cultural differences, faculty development, financial sustainability, and maintaining excellence across multiple sites. In this session, we’ll share practical lessons from a program that expanded into multiple urban and rural communities across three counties. We’ll discuss common pitfalls, culture-building across distance, sustaining quality, and how to discern whether expansion is right for your organization.
