We Took a Boat Into the City… and Went Fishing

Urban fishing on the Thames River in London, Ontario is already a unique experience, but fishing it from a boat with an outboard made this one of the most memorable episodes I ever filmed. For new viewers, I hosted a fishing TV show called HOOKED for a number of years, and I recently got the rights to post Season 3 on YouTube, and this particular episode was filmed a few years ago in London, Ontario while I was still in high school. My dad actually discovered fishing on the Thames River while he was attending Fanshawe College in London. Before that, he had never seen a carp because he grew up in Northern Ontario, where the climate was too harsh for them. What makes this episode so special to me is that my dad got to share some of his memories of fishing in London while he was in college, and now I attend university in London and have been exploring the Thames River myself in some of his old stomping grounds. The most unique part of this video is that we fished the Thames River from a boat. There are lots of people who fish the Thames from shore, kayaks, and paddle boards, but I don’t know many people who have hauled a boat with an outboard through the river to fish around the forks downtown. I’m not sure if we’re the only ones who have done it, but it was definitely one of the most different and memorable ways I’ve ever fished in Southern Ontario. Carp fishing is heating up right now in Southern Ontario, and the redhorse sucker run is also happening in the spring on the Thames River, which can be super fun to experience. The river also has other fishing opportunities throughout the summer and fall, including smallmouth bass and walleye. This was one of my favourite episodes I ever filmed because it was with my dad, the person who really started my passion for fishing. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed filming it.
