BUILDING A HOUSE EP.12 - Installing my RADIANT CEILING I'm renovating my house, and what you see in this video is one of the most unique and controversial systems: radiant ceiling heating. A choice that many have asked me: "Does it make sense to install ceiling heating if the heat is known to rise?" or "Is underfloor or ceiling heating better for comfort and efficiency?" Today, I'll take you on a tour of my construction site to tell you, step by step, why I decided to opt for this solution and the challenges I faced. Let's start with a fundamental question: how do you install a radiant ceiling system with an exposed wooden roof? It wasn't easy, because it's a meticulously crafted project that must respect height, aesthetics, and thermal output. We had to meticulously design every detail, from the plumbing diagrams to the plasterboard false ceilings to the pipes hidden in the covings. The result? An invisible, silent system capable of both heating and cooling. And the cooling performance is truly astonishing: many people think that heat rises and therefore the ceiling doesn't work, but that's precisely where comfort is created. Hot air rises, meets the cool surface of the ceiling, cools, and descends, creating natural convective motions that provide a pleasant breeze in the summer without fans or noisy split units. And in winter? This is where the concept of radiant heat comes into play. Like the sun on a cold day, the ceiling system transmits heat through radiation, ensuring a uniform sensation without those annoying convective motions that raise dust or create drafts. It's a different kind of comfort, more natural and healthier. But why did I choose a mixed solution, with flooring on the ground floor and ceiling above? Simple: every home is different, and every system choice must be tailored to suit. I wanted parquet on the sleeping level, but wood is an insulator that hinders underfloor heating. So the best solution was the ceiling, which guarantees efficiency and comfort even with more complex finishes. There were plenty of unexpected issues during installation: a pipe punctured by a screw, pipes that needed to be hidden between exposed roof beams, plumbing connections that needed to be inspected… in short, it wasn't an easy job. But it's precisely in these details that you can see the difference between an improvised system and a well-designed one. So, let's get back to the original question: is it worth installing a radiant ceiling system in your home? In my opinion, yes, if designed and installed properly. It offers superior summer comfort compared to underfloor heating, rapid response, energy efficiency, and architectural freedom.
