Inside Lagos Airport's Massive 712 Billion Naira Upgrade

Nigeria has approved ₦712 billion — nearly half a billion dollars — for the complete reconstruction of Terminal 1 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The 47-year-old building, originally modelled after Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, will be stripped down to its concrete frame and rebuilt from scratch by CCECC with entirely new systems, a modern glass facade, automated gates, and smart infrastructure. The project also includes the expansion of Terminal 2, new ring roads, a skywalk connecting both terminals into one unified complex, a 14.6km perimeter security system, and CAT 2 runway lighting upgrades. When complete, the airport's combined capacity will reach approximately 17.6 million passengers per year — roughly four times current levels. This is the largest single aviation investment in Nigeria's recent history, funded entirely domestically through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. Construction began in March 2026, with a projected timeline of 22 months.
