The project is highly unusual in several key ways, not the least of which is that Ethiopia is a struggling country, mired by political and economic instability. We’re all familiar with airports. On January 10th, 2026, ground was broken on this 12-point-5 billion dollar project which is set to make the country’s Oromia region the home of Africa’s largest airport by 2030. The passenger capacity will be more than 4 times that of the country’s current largest airport, and if successful it could turn the geographically centralized African nation into a major hub on the global stage.
