Nigeria Jailed a Power Minister for 75 Years Over This Dam

The $6 Billion Dam That Could Have Powered Nigeria For more than fifty years, Nigeria has been trying to build a dam that could power roughly a quarter of the country. It has spent decades, survived six presidents, and produced exactly zero watts. The Mambilla Hydropower Project, high on the Mambilla Plateau in north-east Nigeria, was designed to be the largest power station the country has ever built — 3,050 megawatts from a system of four dams, 33 kilometres of tunnels, and two power houses carved inside the mountain. The engineering was solved back in the 1970s. What was never solved was the politics. This is the story of how that happened: a disputed $6 billion contract signed in 2003, a Chinese-financed revival that went nowhere, an arbitration case in Paris that pulled two former Nigerian presidents to the witness stand, and a former power minister sentenced in 2026 to 75 years for diverting funds meant for Mambilla and the Zungeru power project.
