Such forest fires have been occurring for some time in Ticino and the south-facing valleys of Graubünden. The southern canton has therefore trained specialized forest firefighting teams in recent years, capable of extinguishing fires even in inaccessible mountain areas with aerial support. This specialization is necessary because forest fires are difficult to extinguish and require highly specialized knowledge. 👨🚒 Extinguishing forest fires quickly is crucial, as they cause extensive destruction. They are not only dangerous for people, animals, and plants, but the risk of rockfalls, landslides, and avalanches also increases when a protective forest has been affected by fire. This, in turn, creates dangers for settlements and transportation routes. 🌳🌲 However, it is not enough to extinguish fires professionally. It is also important to prevent them in advance whenever possible. In Ticino, the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Lake and Landscape Research is therefore investigating where the risk of forest fires is highest. Researchers there have found that forest fires vary depending on the region and time of year. 🚒 They have also developed an early warning system that can assess when the risk of forest fires is highest. The cantons on the northern side of the Alps can also benefit from this knowledge in the future. Due to climate change, heat waves and droughts are steadily increasing.
