St. Pauli Beyond the Reeperbahn | Hamburg’s Beautiful Mess

St. Pauli is one of Hamburg’s most famous neighborhoods — known for the Reeperbahn, nightlife, the red-light district, FC St. Pauli, the harbor, and Beatles history. But this district is much more than a party mile. In this walking tour, I look at St. Pauli from a different angle: as a place shaped by port life, sex work, housing struggles, political resistance, gentrification, music, tourism, and the stubborn idea that a city should still have room for people who don’t fit neatly into the brochure. We visit Hafenstraße, where squatters fought demolition in the 1980s and eventually forced Hamburg to negotiate. We look at the former Essohäuser site, where an ugly but useful part of the Kiez was demolished — and where the new Kiezkante project is now being built. We talk about the Reeperbahn, Herbertstraße, sex work and regulation, without turning people into scenery. And yes, we also stop by Große Freiheit, where the Beatles learned their craft by playing night after night in St. Pauli’s clubs. St. Pauli is messy. Cleaning it up too much would be wrong. Mistaking that mess for a costume would also be wrong. Enjoy the postcard.
