The Greenburn Round (Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott & Helm Crag | Lake District Walks

A hike out in the Lake District, England doing the Greenburn Round taking in the 4 Wainwrights Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag. This hike starts out from a road side layby on the A593 near the Travellers Rest just outside Grasmere. On this hike I'm accompanied by my friend Christine who puts up with my cheek once again after having a 5 months rest from it! From the layby carry on up the A593 towards the Travellers Rest, passing it and then taking the next country lane to your left. Walk up the country lane until you see a sign saying public footpath Greenburn. At this point take the high path up the country lane marked as a private road. Eventually you will come to a gate where you need to bare right up the grassy bank. The path up to Steel Fell is largely grass slopes which pose no difficulties and are not too boggy. Once approaching the top you will come across a first cairn which is adorned with bits of old metal fence post but the actual summit cairn of Steel Fell is a little further up so continue past this point. Continue over the summit and descend alongside the fence to your right. The path is easy to follow in good visibility though the ground is very boggy. In places the path can become indistinct whilst negotiating bogs, keep left and with Calf Crag in sight it is simply a case of finding the best route through the bog. Then make the climb to the rocky summit of Calf Crag. Turn left from the summit cairn and drop down mainly grass through rocky crags. The path is easy enough to follow but keep high. Gibson Knott appears out of the blue after traversing the rocky knoll for some time. The summit of Gibson Knott is easily noticeable as it is marked by a pile of rocks. Now continue past the cairn and follow the path and you should be able to see Helm Crag in front of you on a clear day. Just continue ahead and climb the zigzag path. At the top bear left to the Howitzer. The true summit is the top of the rock, a good climb up. From there walk along the summit ridge to the Lion and Lamb a few hundred metres on. From the Lion and Lamb, continue on with a bit of scramble down until you reach a path that bares right. This path is easy to follow and drops down via some rocky steps. At the bottom of the rocky steps you will come to some fencing where you drop down and from there you bare left to continue on through a wooded area. The path eventually takes you to the start of an area of housing, continue past the housing on Easedale Road until you come across a sign for a public footpath on your left. Take this path until it meets a country road where you bare left again. This eventually meets up with the A593 where you turn left and walk a short while before you get back to the layby you started at. Route taken: https://allthegearbutnoidea.blogspot....
