Great Carrs, Grey Friar, Swirl How & Wetherlam Circular | Lake District Walks
A circular hike up to the 4 Wainwrights Great Carrs, Grey Friar, Swirl How and Wetherlam from the Three Shire Stone on the Wrynose Pass in the Lake District National Park, England. The hike starts out at The Three Shire Stone on the Wrynose Pass. There is limited free parking here at the side of the road. Directly opposite the Three Shire Stone is a path that takes you up on to Wet Side Edge. Once on this path follow it up and bare left at the intersection which climbs up the hill side. Eventually you get onto a wide ridge were you have 2 options to either carry on to Great Carrs, like we did on this occasion, or bare right to do the out and back to Grey Friar. To get to Great Carrs follow the ridge line around to the left, going over or skirting around Little Carrs. There is a pile of stones marking the summit of Great Carrs. From Great Carrs head in a westerly direction for an out and back to the next Wainwright summit of Grey Friar. The summit of Grey Friar has 2 piles of rocks and we tagged both to be sure. From Grey Friar you get great views towards the Scafell range. After Grey Friar it's head back the way you came to then head up towards Swirl How but not before checking out the Halifax bomber crash site memorial. Here lies the wreckage of Halifax Bomber LL505 FD-S which crashed October 22 1944 on Great Carrs, killing all 8 crew on board (7 Canadians, 1 British). The Halifax was on a night navigation exercise from Topcliffe in Yorkshire when they ran into thick cloud. The pilot descended so that the navigator could get a visual fix on the ground but the bomber crashed on the ridge between Great Carrs and Swirl How. From the crash site it's head on up to the ridge line in a easterly direction until you come upon the rather more impressive summit cairn of Swirl How. From Swirl How it's carry on following the ridge line for less than one hundred metres and then bare left to take on the scramble of the Prison Band down to Swirl Hawse. At Swirl Hause carry on straight over to take the path up to Wetherlam. The path is easy to follow and the summit is marked by a pile of rocks. To head back to the start point of the Three Shire Stone now head over the summit and down the path at the other side. Taking care with the scramble down Wetherlam Edge. At Birk Fell Hawse take the grassy bank down towards the old mine workings and what looks like a bridge. Once at the mine workings you need to find a suitable crossing point of Greenburn Beck. Once Greenburn Beck has been safely crossed it's head up the banking to find the right of way path where you take a left to head back towards the Three Shire Stone. When you're getting close to the start head down the grassy bank to cut off some time and distance to get back to your start point.
