Le campane di Arizzano (VB)

The first official document in which the municipality of Arizzano is mentioned dates back to the 12th century, when a deed of donation of some land to the central church of Intra (Italy) was signed. The village was acquired by the Duchy of Milan in 1393 and remained a fief of the noble Moriggia family until 1783. Many villages in the area were able to join Arizzano, which had become one of the wealthiest centres in the entire province by the 18th century. The period of excellent economy led to the construction of the new parish church in Baroque style, an extension of an ancient medieval oratory dedicated to Saint Bernard. The church had already been rebuilt during the Renaissance and a stoup in beautiful Ornavasso marble, made in 1595, is still preserved from that period. The most interesting feature of the church are the mosaics covering the interior walls and floor, which were entirely created by the parish priest in the mid-20th century. f' sharp - g' sharp - a' sharp - b' - c'' sharp The beautiful bell tower towers over the entire surrounding area due to its bulk, erected in limestone at the same time as the church. The previous bells were replaced in 1861 with the casting of a magnificent new concert of five bells in F sharp major, made in 1861 by the famous Felice Bizzozero of Varese. The tower's five bells are still rung exclusively by hand, as the possibility of ringing the bells by rope and with a wooden keyboard, recently restored by my best friend Luca, who is the titular bell-ringer of this village, has been preserved. The bells are rung by me and my friends during the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, which is celebrated during the month of August when there are many tourists.
